This course is delivered at various sites around Queensland and is delivered over a 2 day time frame. There is also the opportunity for learners who need a little more time to consolidate and demonstrate their skills to attend an extra day if required.


These units can be undertaken via RPL if you are currently working in an outdoor recreation environment and have access to experienced outdoor leaders with a qualification in Canoeing / Kayaking who would be willing to vouch for your skills.

SISSS00018 Canoeing Guide Flat Water Skillset


Flat water canoeing is an excellent tool for outdoor leaders to help students learn teamwork, communication and problem solving skills. This course will provide (or give you a chance to refresh) the skills and knowledge required to guide a group of canoeists on flatwater.

As with all of our courses we pay special attention to how this activity can be used educationally by paying specific attention to teaching strategies, active reflection methods and how to help your group members transfer their learning to everyday life.

The course is run over 5 days and covers:

  • basic skills of canoeing
  • deep water rescues
  • navigation
  • group management
  • teaching and reflection strategies

This course will consist of:
  • precourse work,
  • attendance at a 3 day training course (Friday - Sunday),
  • a project and practice to be undertaken in your own time and,
  • a final 2 day overnight assessment weekend.

Those wishing to guide canoeing trips on flat and undemanding water.

If you are in the SE Queensland we can come to your classroom or you can visit our Tallebudgera training centre for this 1 day course.

Provide First Aid – HLTAID003 is the National Standard in First Aid and includes HLTAID001 Provide CPR along with extensive first aid management training and practice.

Ocean and Pool Lifeguard Course – Students


This course provides you with ability to receive your Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) and your Pool Lifeguard Skillset all in one course.

This course is available to high school class groups through flexible delivery to accomodate each individual school’s needs. This course also contributes 4 points towards a student’s QCE.

The Certificate II in Public Safety is the nationally recognised equivalent of the Life Saving Bronze Medallion. It equips participants with the skills necessary to provide rescue and first aid services in an aquatic emergency. The Pool Lifeguard skill set is the nationally recognised award required to work as a Pool Lifeguard.

The course can be completed in 6 months to 1 year and covers:

  • Language, literacy and numeracy skills in the workplace
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Australian Indigenous cultural knowledge
  • Employability skills and learning pathways

If the course is facilitated by an Outdoor Education Centre, three Outdoor Recreation competencies can be included to give students experience in working in the outdoors.
